The Rhode Island Agricultural Experiment Station was established in 1888 at the same time as the State Agricultural School. In 1892, the Rhode Island College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts was founded. In 1951, the name of the institution was changed to the University of Rhode Island. Through the past century, the Agricultural Experiment Station has conducted research dedicated to addressing challenges in agriculture, food production and processing, nutrition, natural resource policy and natural resource management. More recently, the reach of the Experiment Station has extended its reach to include renewable energy and climate change.

Importantly, the Rhode Island Agricultural Experiment Station is committed to engaging in cutting edge research dedicated to resolving critical issues faced by Rhode Islanders and Americans.

Programs in the portfolio include: Food Safety; Nutrition, Health and Obesity Prevention; Global Food Security and Hunger; Children, 4-H and Families; Sustainable Communities; Vector Borne Diseases and Human Health; Aquaculture and Fisheries; Climate Change; The Environment and Adaptive Agro-ecosystems; Community Gardening and Outreach; Health and Well-being of Livestock; Horticulture and the Reduction of Pests and Disease Outbreaks in Plants; Natural and Environmental Economics, Markets and Policy; and Sustainable Energy.
